BUFFALO, N.Y. - A series of videos taken by West Virginia forward John Flowers on Saturday night and posted on his Twitter page spread across the Internet on Sunday and soared in popularity hours before the Mountaineers defeated Missouri to advance to the Sweet 16.
Mock music videos of teammates Da'Sean Butler, Joe Mazzulla and Jonnie West were linked and shared across the Internet. The four were surprised by the attention generated by their shenanigans, but unable to explain the criticism they'd drawn.
Mazzulla and Butler said they'd gotten feedback suggesting their actions were inappropriate and timed poorly with a big game so close.
"Someone said it was more embarrassing than a sex tape," Mazzulla said.
That would be Deadspin.com, the Internet's most popular sports blog, which linked the story and had almost 20,000 hits by the time the game was over.
Under the surely sarcastic headline "WVU Hotel Room Videos Are No Less Embarrassing Than A Sex Tape," Deadspin wrote "Da'Sean Butler, Jonnie West, Joe Mazzulla and cameraman John Flowers spent last night at their hotel not going over playbooks for this afternoon's showdown, but generally making fools of themselves."
"I don't know what they want us to do," Butler said. "They have us locked up in a hotel all day watching TV, watching games. We're having fun. Some people are like, 'Oh, there's no reason for that.' What do they want us to do? Sit in the hotel and read books all day?"
Later in the post, Deadspin seemed to laugh along with everyone else.
