PARKERSBURG - If Justin Johnson thought growing up in Parkersburg was a good reason to pay attention to WVU football, he was given one more in the past few years when his older brother, Josh Jenkins, joined the team as an offensive guard.
Now the Parkersburg High senior has yet another. Last week, he received an official scholarship offer from the Mountaineers to go along with previous offers he has from Marshall and Ohio University.
“It was just good to know,” Johnson told wvillustrated.com. “I just appreciate them offering me because a lot of people don’t have that chance to get offered by a college, you know?”
True, not many high school athletes get the opportunity to attend a major university, and far fewer have a full scholarship on the table when they do. It seems there must be something in his blood that has given his family its second offer in three seasons to play ball in Morgantown.
As a kid, the idea of playing for the Mountaineers is something that many young West Virginians dream of. Johnson was no different.
“I’ve always liked West Virginia,” he says. “I’m from West Virginia, and most people from West Virginia are West Virginia fans. You know how that goes.”
Still, the 6-foot-3, 285-pound offensive lineman is just getting ready to enter his senior season, and with three offers and contact from schools like Maryland and Michigan, Johnson is not quite ready to give in to childhood fantasies and say that West Virginia is his top choice. He’s got plenty of games left to raise his stock even higher, plenty of calls to make to prospective coaching staffs, and plenty of official visits to take to see those coaches.
“I’m just getting used to this whole recruiting process and trying to figure everything out. I’m just going to think about it all and weigh my options.”
