PITT WEEK: We must admit that for some reason, we're having a hard time getting as excited as usual about the Pitt football game.
It's not that our dislike for the kitty cats from Yinzer Yoo is any less than usual, it's just that it would be so much more exciting if WVU and Pitt were playing the de facto Big East football title game with a BCS bowl spot on the line -- which is how it should be.
This is partially the case, actually, because WVU could pretty much knock Pitt out of contention with a win and Pitt pretty much can ice the Big East crown and said BCS bowl bid if they beat the 'Eers in Pittsburgh Friday on national television.
THAT MEANS there still is a lot of fan motivation attached to this game. However, knowing that a WVU win over Pitt and even one over Rutgers eight days later on Dec. 4 doesn't guarantee WVU the conference championship and a BCS bowl appearance tamps down our fervor a bit from maniacal to say, boisterous.
To use a time-honored sports cliche, WVU is not in control of its Big East and BCS fate right now.
No, WVU has to do all of the above and then hope that UConn loses one of its next two Big East games -- either against Cincinnati this Saturday at home or against South Florida on Dec. 4 on the road.
That's because WVU lost to UConn (Freaking UConn!) in a mistake-marred offensive fiasco of a performance that sent the Mountaineer Nation first reeling and then subsequently into all sorts of what-if computations.

THAT MEANS if both WVU and UConn finish out with 5-2 records, UConn goes to the BCS bowl because it beat WVU. That also would be the case if WVU, Pitt and UConn wind up in a three-way tie at the top of the Big East because UConn has beaten WVU and Pitt this season.
So here we sit, hoping for Cincinnati and/or South Florida to do what the Mountaineers couldn't do -- beat freaking UConn. It kind of dulls the knives in this year's "Beat Pitt" drawer. Not by much, but enough to keep us from frothing at the mouth come game time.
