MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia's football recruiting class took off this morning thanks to a commitment from one of the top uncommitted players on the Mountaineers' board.
Florida wide receiver Ivan McCartney announced at a ceremony at his high school that he would sign with West Virginia. His signed letter of intent arrived at the WVU football offices a short time later.
The 6-foot-3, 183-pound wide receiver chose West Virginia over Miami and Florida. The Florida Timee-Union listed him as the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in Florida, the Miami Herald has him as one of the top five players in the area and the Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register listed him as one of the Top 20 players in the Southeast.
McCartney was to sign along with another Miramar wide receiver, Dante Chambers. Both played in the same high school program that produced three current Mountaineers, including quarterback Geno Smith. Miramar is coached by form Mountaineer Damon Cogdell.
The early list also included another player from whom the Mountaineers never received a solid commitment, but signed anyway. He is Qudral Forte, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound defensive back from Atlanta who also had offers from Georgia Tech, Mississippi and North Carolina.
Prior to McCartney's announcement, West Virginia's recruiting class began to take shape right off the bat Tuesday morning when the Mountaineers received signed letters of intent from many of their most intriguing prospects, including two highly-regarded quarterbacks and a safety who bounced back and forth between WVU and Marshall.
The list of early recruits announced by the school includes letters received from both of West Virginia's two highly-regarded quarterbacks, Jeremy Johnson and Barry Brunetti, as well as Travis Bell, the Florida safety who committed to West Virginia and then to Marshall and then signed with the Mountaineers.
Others to sign include recent safety commitment Michael Dorsey, linebackers Doug Rigg, Jewone Snow and Troy Gloster; wide receivers Deon Long and Bruce Irvin, offensive linemen Quinton Spain and Marquis Wallace, running back Trey Johnson, defensive end Trevor Demko and the only West Virginian in the class, Bridgeport safety Wes Tonkery.
